This Day in Horror History: M. Night Shyamalan’s SIGNS Was Released in 2002

On this day in horror history, M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs with Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and Abigail Breslin was released in 2002.

It was shot on location were filmed in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 2001 with all the house and cornfield scenes filmed inside the 40 acres Delaware Valley University agricultural college campus. The scenes in the bookstore and the pizza shop were shot in Newtown and the pharmacy scene was shot in Morrisville, Pennsylvania.

The $72M film grossed $22.9M at the domestic box-office and snagged an additional $180.2M international for a total of $408.2M worldwide.

Produced by Shyamalan with Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, and Sam Mercer. The score was composed by James Newton Howard.

Here’s the synopsis: Everything that farmer Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) assumed about the world is changed when he discovers a message – an intricate pattern of circles and lines – carved into his crops. As he investigates the unfolding mystery, what he finds will forever alter the lives of his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and children (Rory Culkin), (Abigail Breslin). A unique story that explores the mysterious real-life phenomena of crop signs and the effects they have on one man and his family.

Rated PG-13 for some frightening moments, the film sports a 74% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: With Signs, Shyamalan proves once again an expert at building suspense and giving audiences the chills.
