In the latest Underworld installment audiences were introduced to the young vampire/lycan hybrid named Eve played by up-and-coming actress India Eisley, whose very existence has world-changing implications for both of the warring species.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to briefly chat with Eisley regarding her role in Underworld 4 as well as more on the jitters she experienced early on while working on the latest sequel alongside her co-star Kate Beckinsale and what’s coming up next for her.
Read on for the highlights from our exclusive interview with Eisley below, and make sure to check out Underworld 4 when it hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves everywhere on May 8th!
Dread Central: I know that Underworld 4 was your first foray into the horror; were you a fan before coming on board? How did the casting process go?
India Eisley: I wasn’t really a fan beforehand since I don’t watch a lot of horror, but I am a fan now, for sure. But I went in and auditioned like normal and a few months went by where I never heard anything; I guess I didn’t really think about it too much. But then one day I was at a coffee shop in Santa Monica with my mom and when I came back from ordering, she pointed out that I had been standing in line right in front of Kate and her daughter. I couldn’t believe it; I knew I had to keep my cool so I didn’t really say anything. Then, Len (Wiseman) walked in and I guess he saw me immediately because he walked right over and asked ‘didn’t you audition for the new Underworld movie?’
Again, I still had to keep my cool so I just responded that I had and then he started talking about how much he and Kate loved my tape which I just thought was polite conversation. As it turns out, it was more than that because a few weeks later I got the call that they wanted me for the role of Eve; I couldn’t believe how all those coincidences worked out like that and was incredibly excited about coming on board the series, that’s for sure.
Dread Central: You probably had to go back and watch the other films then before you started working on this, I imagine; because Underworld is pretty big franchise to come on board, did you have any jitters when you first started working on the last film?
India Eisley: Yeah, I did watch the other films before we shot just so I could get a sense of this universe because this was so different than anything I had done before; I guess part of that was so I knew what I was getting myself into and the other part was making sure I understood how my character fit into Selene’s world in particular because our relationship was so important to this story.
I definitely was a bit nervous at first about making it, but Kate, Len and everyone were all so great about making me comfortable that we quickly all became a family while working on this. It was a lot of work but it was a lot of fun, too.
Dread Central: What I thought was cool about your character is that Eve is just as deadly as the creatures more than twice her age, which makes her a bit of a wild card. Plus there was a lot of physicality to the role, too, which was fun to see you as take down so-called ‘grown-ups’. Was it fun for you to play this kind of character, and did you have to do a lot of your own stunt work on Underworld 4?
India Eisley: You know, I didn’t get to do quite as many of the stunts that I had wanted to so I was a little bummed out about that because I really wanted to push myself harder than I got to. Hopefully, though, I’ll get to do more stunts on the next oneā¦if there is a next one, I should say (laughs).
But Eve is a very animalistic creature which isn’t anything I had played before; and sure she’s an innocent young girl but there’s also something very deadly inside of her, too, and she definitely can’t control it right now so that was a big part of my approach to her- make her feel like a wild creature that’s being restrained and see what happens once you let her loose. I think what makes Eve truly scary is that she has no idea just what she is capable of and not knowing the power you hold can be very dangerous.
Dread Central: With Underworld 4 making its home release bow soon, what’s coming up for you then?
India Eisley: I think I have a Disney movie coming up next and then I get to do an action film later this year in South Africa, which is really cool because I’ve never been there before so I’m really excited for that. Also, I’m hoping they let me do some stunts for it because I really have fun doing that kind of work; plus I want to see what I can get away with for this movie since I didn’t get to do that many for Underworld.
