This Day in Horror History: ALFRED HITCHCOCK Was Born in 1899

On this day in horror history, Psycho and The Birds director Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone, Essex, England in 1899.

Known as the “Master of Suspense”, Hitchcock is one of the most influential filmmakers ever, directing over 50 films in a six-decade career. He entered the film industry as a title card designer in 1919 before making his directorial debut with The Pleasure Garden in 1925.

He followed that up with The Lodger in 1927, The 39 Steps in 1935, and The Lady Vanishes in 1938. Then he moved to Hollywood to helm hits such as Rebecca, Suspicion, Notorious, and Dial M For Murder. Oh, and let’s not forget Rear Window and North by Northwest.

In 2012, hundreds of film critics took a worldwide poll on the greatest film ever made and Vertigo finally usurped Orson Welles’s masterpiece Citizen Kane. That said, his personal favorite film was Shadow of a Doubt.

His films snagged 46 Oscars nominations and six wins. Hitchcock himself was nominated for Best Director five times (Rebecca, Lifeboat, Spellbound, Rear Window, Psycho). He never won. But he was knighted in 1979 and died the next year at 80 in Bel Air, California on April 29, 1980.
