Universal 1440 Entertainment and director Ron Yuan’s upcoming untitled 47 Ronin sequel will blend horror with martial arts action, and cyber-punk.

The original action-fantasy film was directed by Carl Rinsch from a screenplay written by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini from a story by Walter Hamada. It starred Keanu Reeves (John Wick and The Matrix), Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ko Shibasaki.
47 Ronin took place in feudal Japan where Lord Asano rules his province with fairness. However, jealous Lord Kira fears that the shogun favors Asano over him and hatches a plot that ends with Asano’s ritual suicide. After Asano’s death, his samurai, led by Oishi, are forced to live as outcasts. Oishi wanders for several years but realizes that he must turn to Kai (Keanu Reeves), a mixed-blood warrior he once rejected, to help him and his ronin comrades take revenge on Lord Kira.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some disturbing images, and thematic elements, the film sports a 16% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: 47 Ronin is a surprisingly dull fantasy adventure, one that leaves its talented international cast stranded within one dimensional roles.
