Olive Films is quickly making a name for itself releasing classic and overlooked gems to DVD and, in particular, Blu-ray.
That trend will continue this summer when they bring us an all-time classic to Blu-ray and a cult favorite that has never before appeared on digital.
July 17th will see the Blu-ray debut of one the greatest science fiction horror films of all time (not to mention one of the most often remade movie ever). I speak of Kevin McCarthy running through the streets to warn us of the pod people in Don Siegel’s 1956 masterpiece Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
One of the greatest and most influential Sci-Fi films of all time stars Kevin McCarthy as a doctor in a small California town whose patients are becoming hysterical and accuse their loved ones as emotionless imposters. Plant-like extra-terrestrials have invaded Earth, replicating the villagers in giant seed “pods” and taking possession of their souls while they sleep. Realizing that the epidemic is out of control, in a terrifying race for his life, he escapes to warn the world of the deadly invasion of the pod people! Directed by the great Don Siegel (Dirty Harry) and co-starring Dana Wynter, Carolyn Jones, Larry Gates and King Donovan.
Olive Films will also give the film a regular DVD re-release as well the same day, but the Blu-ray, no doubt, is what will have everyone’s attention. Restored in HD from 35mm film, both versions will be presented in Superscope (2.00:1) widescreen.
The DVD will retail for $19.95, the Blu-ray for $29.95.
Then, August 6th, for the first time ever on DVD, let alone Blu-ray, Olive Films will release the 1981 creature feature The Boogens.
In a small town near Denver, two young men begin to explore a long-abandoned old mine recently re-opened by a group of minors. When one the men is discovered missing, his friends begin a search that leads them to horrifying consequences. They’re all unaware of the evil that’s been unleashed and soon, one by one, a monster that no one has seen snatches up the townspeople. Suddenly, the grisly truth is revealed and a young couple is forced to confront the unknown in order to save their lives… and the entire town.
The Boogens will be newly mastered in HD from a 35mm archival print. Both the DVD and Blu-ray will boast an audio commentary track by director James Conway, star Rebecca Balding, and screenwriter David O’Malley.
The DVD will retail for $24.95, the Blu-ray for $29.95.
Also worth noting, last year Olive Films gave Eugene Lourie’s overlooked and underrated 1958 Frankenstein-ish sci-fi horror gem The Colossus of New York it’s first-ever DVD release; June 19th will bring the Blu-ray release of the creepy, black & white, rampaging robot movie from the director of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Gorgo.
After the accidental death of a brilliant scientist… his lunatic father and brother transplant the dead man’s brain into the body of a giant robot. The operation is successful, but the Colossus Robot mourns for his wife and child and doesn’t want to be the guinea pig in his father’s psychotic project and starts displaying homicidal behaviors. Sci-Fi specialist Eugène Lourié (Gorgo) directs this Frankenstein-flavored feature.
Newly remastered from a 35mm archival print and presented in 1:66:1 aspect ratio.
The Colossus of New York on Blu-ray will retail for $29.95.
