Michael Crichton’s SPHERE Series in Development at HBO
HBO is developing a new series based on Michael Crichton’s novel Sphere with Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and Team Downey executive producing with Denise Thé (Westworld) who will serve as showrunner.
Guess these guys love them some Mike Crichton.
Anyhow, the series will take place 1,000 feet under the sea, where a group of scientists confronts the surreal, beautiful, and deadly mysteries of the universe, only to find the people closest to us may prove to be the most alien.
That synopsis sounds pretentious. But the novel is fantastic. The 1998 movie with Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson? Not so much.
Here’s the trailer anyhow.
Here’s a better rundown via Amazon: Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime—truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.
