Exclusive Track Debut: “Who’s There” from Fangoria’s PORNO Official Soundtrack

SXSW and Fangoria’s horror-comedy Porno, featuring an original score by Carla Patullo, will release its motion picture soundtrack with Lakeshore Records on September 11th with presales starting September 4th.

Read more about the film and soundtrack below.

Synopsis:
When five teen employees at the local movie theater in a small Christian town discover a mysterious old film hidden in its basement, they unleash an alluring succubus who gives them a sex education…written in blood.

Porno is directed by Keola Racela from a screenplay penned by Matt Black and Laurence Vannicelli; the film stars David Arrow, Evan Daves, and Blake French.

In an earlier review of the film, Variety praised “Carla Patullo’s score is a nicely poker-faced channeling of fantasy-action soundtrack tropes from a generation ago.” Today, Dread Central is thrilled to exclusively debut a track from the soundtrack. Give “Who’s There” a listen below.

“As I wrote music for this film, I focused on the human body and the visceral impact from it,” Patullo tells Dread Central exclusively. “I’m a singer and that’s my primary instrument, and the first thing I thought about conceptually was to pair my voice with Lilith, the demon, to give the music this strong human, even animalistic quality. So I experimented and played around with many different types of vocalizations that I could use throughout the score, such as singing, sighing, screaming, breathing, etc., And then I layered them like you might layer different orchestral instruments. I also had fun manipulating the vocal recordings with amps and other distortions to give an otherworldly essence to Lilith’s character. I hope when people listen to the album, they can feel her presence through these vocalizations in the intimate and visceral sounds I tried to create. I think the track ‘Who’s There’ really shows this side of the music.”

Directed by Keola Racela, Porno was a production of the Sundance Film Music and Sound Design Lab in 2018 which partnered Racela and Patullo on the project after Patullo was selected as a Composer Fellow by Skywalker Sound and the Sundance Institute. Porno premiered in 2019 at SXSW and was released in 2020 by Fangoria, which was recently acquired by Wanderwell Entertainment.

“Being a part of the Sundance Film Music and Sound Lab gave us the opportunity to step away from real deadlines and just experiment,” said Patullo. “We were matched up with Mac Smith, a sound designer at Skywalker Sound who also pushed us into more experimental spaces.”

“As I wrote music for this film, I mainly relied on my gut instincts. I’m a singer and that’s my primary instrument, and the first thing I thought about conceptually was to pair my voice with Lilith, the demon. It was a visceral instinct, and with this film, I’m really happy with that decision. I tested out and played with many different types of vocalizations that I could use throughout and layer such as sighing, screaming, breathing, etc., and then manipulating those with amps and other distortions,” said Patullo.

“I hope when people listen to the album, they can feel Lilith’s presence through these vocalizations in an intimate and humanistic way. I think the track “Take Out The Trash” really shows this part of the score.”
