This Day in Horror History: BAIT 3D Was Released in 2012

A year before the Sharknado franchise sent the apex predators aloft, and several years before films like The Shallows and 47 Meters Down made shark-themed horror a summertime staple, the Australian blockbuster Bait 3D put sharks someplace extremely unlikely: A supermarket!

If you’ve never seen the tense genre mash-up for yourself (or if it’s been a while) check out the trailer and synopsis for Bait 3D below.

Synopsis:
A freak tsunami traps a group of people in a submerged grocery store. As they try to escape, they are hunted by white sharks that are hungry for meat.

Bait 3D is directed by Kimble Rendall and stars Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson, and Adrian Pang.

Trivia:
Despite only earning approximately $800,000 in its home country of Australia, Bait 3D was a sizable success overseas, making over $24 million in China alone. It also made $2 million in Italy. As a result of its international success, Arclight Films announced that the film will receive a sequel, however, no further films have yet been produced. (Source)

Three different Pomeranians were used in the movie to play Heather’s dog, Bulli – one for swimming, one for barking, and one for running. (Source)
