Guillermo Del Toro Explains How PINOCCHIO Is Like FRANKENSTEIN
Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited stop-motion Pinocchio flick is in the works. And today, del Toro explains how the classic character is like Frankenstein.
Del Toro tells The Guardian: “To me, they’re not exactly the same, but they’re similar. They are both creatures that are created and thrown into a world that they have to figure out on their own. They both have a moral, spiritual journey.“
He adds: “I thought Pinocchio could be a great opportunity to talk about disobedience. Obedience isn’t a virtue, it’s a burden. Disobedience is the seed of reason – it’s a desirable way to gain your own soul. I thought this could be an interesting… if we set it during the rise of Mussolini – an interesting time for a puppet that refuses to obey.”
Produced by del Toro and Lisa Henson from a script co-written by Patrick McHale (Adventure Time) it’s set to hit Netflix sometime in 2021. The killer cast includes Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, David Bradley, Burn Gorman, with and Ewan McGregor as Jiminy Cricket and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio.
