This Day in Horror History: Pint-Sized Slasher MIKEY Opened in 1992

On this day in horror history, director Dennis Dimster’s psychological crime slasher film Mikey with Brian Bonsall and Ashley Laurence was released in 1992.

Following the James Bulger murder in 1993, the film was withdrawn from release in the UK. It had been classified with an 18 certificate for cinema in November 1992, but head censor James Ferman demanded the certificate be returned and refused to issue it with a UK release certificate in 1996. Unlike other banned films that have since been reclassified and released, Mikey remains prohibited in the UK.

Here’s the trailer.

Written by Jonathan Glassner, the film begins after each member of his family has died in unexplained accidents, young Mikey, a seemingly innocent and sweet little boy, is placed with an adoptive family. The family will discover the boy’s true personality at their own expense. Bonsall and Laurence’s co-stars include Josie Bissett, John Diehl, Mimi Craven, Whitby Hertford, Lyman Ward, and Mark Venturini.
