Big things may have small beginnings, but the opening weekend for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Alien pseudo-prequel was anything but small. Prometheus may have had to settle for second, but that second was one of the biggest second place openings of all time.
Box Office Mojo has Prometheus landing in second place for the weekend behind Madagascar 3 with an impressive $50 million. Even more impressive considering this was a dark science fiction flick with an R rating, generally considered a hard sell. That $50 million opening weekend is on top of the $50 million it grossed from the international territories in which it has already been released. How well it holds up at the box office next week will greatly reveal its ultimate fate and perhaps whether the major Hollywood studios will be willing to gamble on big budget R-rated movies again.
Meanwhile, after over-performing last weekend, Snow White and the Huntsman suffered a big 59% drop in its second week, falling to third place with $23 million. The dark fantasy also starring Charlize Theron is now just shy of $100 million domestically.
Men in Black 3 continues to struggle a bit with a fourth place, $13.5 million weekend. At this point it looks like it won’t quite match the previous sequel’s box office tally.
Piranha 3DD could only muster about $36,000 on 78 screens. That’s down 82% from its abysmal opening weekend. Stick a trident in the Piranha franchise – it’s done.
Next week the only horror opening at the box office comes in the form of the latest Adam Sandler suckfest, a different kind of horror than that which we cover.
In two weeks one of the biggest wild cards of the summer, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, finally stakes it claim to the summer box office. But will the cheesy title be such a turn-off that it dooms the movie’s chances?
