Ice Cube & Timur Bekmambetov Team for DISTRICT 9 Style Sci-Fi Thriller
Ghosts of Mars and Friday star Ice Cube is set to team with producer Timur Bekmambetov for a new sci-fi thriller in the vein of Neill Blomkamp’s District 9.
Universal has fast-tracked the untitled flick (which will use screen capture technology developed by Bekmambetov) and production will begin next month.
Little is known about the film that it’s being described as a grounded sci-fi thriller centered on the conflict between privacy and surveillance. It will be directed by Rich Lee from a script by Kenneth Golde. Bekmambetov and Patrick Aiello produce.
While I’m not a huge fan of the tech, screen capturing allows for cheap productions that can observe social distancing guidelines, as cast and crew can work from their own homes, anywhere in the world. Recent hit horror flicks that used the tech include Unfriended, Searching, and Shudder’s recent breakout Host.
