This Day in Horror History: TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL Opened in 2005
On this day in horror history, Eli Craig’s killer backwoods horror-comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil with Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, and Katrina Bowden opened in 2010.
Principal photography began in Calgary, Alberta in July 2009 with a budget of $5M. The first trailer was released that Halloween. It then premiered at Sundance and was part of the SXSW before Magnolia gave the flick a limited theatrical release in the US. It grossed $52,843 from 30 theaters on its opening weekend and currently stands at $223,838 here in the U.S. Add that to the $4.5M brought in elsewhere in the world, and the worldwide gross adds up to $4.7M.
Written by Craig and Morgan Jurgenson, the film tells the delightful tale of two scruffy backwoods pals’ (Labine and Tudyk) whose vacation takes a bloody turn when ignorant college students mistake them for a pair of murderous hillbillies.
Rated R for R bloody horror violence, language, and brief nudity, the film sports an 85% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Like the best horror/comedies, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil mines its central crazy joke for some incredible scares, laughs, and — believe it or not — heart.
