Netflix Snags SXSW Short SELFIE For Feature Treatment

Netflix has snagged the rights to Colin Minihan (What Keeps You Alive) and John Poliquin’s short film Selfie with plans to produce it into a feature film.

The film will explore the horrors of body image in the age of social media.

Here’s the short’s synopsis via IMDb:

In a world where social media app Selfie dominates over Instagram and TikTok, insecure teenager Sarah has had enough. She no longer wants to subscribe to the culture of presenting a perfect online persona. In a moment of clarity, Sarah makes the unpopular decision to delete her accounts. But, the “perfect” version of herself that she’s given power online won’t be deleted that easily.

Poliquin directed the short (which was set to premiere at SXSW in March before it was canceled due to COVID-19) and co-wrote with Minihan. They will also pen the film adaptation and Minihan will produce with Benjamin Anderson.

Minihan and Poliquin are also behind Shudder’s recent LGBTQ thriller, Spiral and they two are also working together on the Screen Gems’ Urban Legend reboot with Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara, which Minihan will write and direct.
