The film sports a 53% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: The Witches misses a few spells, but Anne Hathaway’s game performance might be enough to bewitch fans of this Roald Dahl tale.
This modern reimagining of Dahl’s beloved story tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.
Directed by Zemeckis from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kenya Barris (black-ish, Shaft) and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) based on the book by Roald Dahl, the film is produced by Zemeckis with Jack Rapke, del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Luke Kelly. Jacqueline Levine, Marianne Jenkins, Michael Siegel, Gideon Simeloff and Cate Adams are executive producers.
Hathaway’s co-stars include Octavia Spencer (The Help, The Shape of Water), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, The Lovely Bones), Kristin Chenoweth (Glee, BoJack Horseman), Chris Rock (Spiral: From the Book of Saw), and newcomers Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (Atlanta) also Codie-Lei Eastick (Holmes & Watson).
