NIGHT BUGS: Father/Daughter Filmmaking Team Create Horror Movie During Pandemic

Starting with their viral Matthew McConaughey Lincoln commercial spoofs in a Barbie Jeep, filmmaker Eric Moyer and his ten-year-old daughter have been collaborating on YouTube videos since 2016, including a Poltergeist tribute, a kids show, and a step-by-step tutorial on how to build a computer.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, they used their free time to write and direct a short horror film for Halloween called Night Bugs. Michelle stars as a young girl investigating a mystery about her cats and discovers that her house might be infested with centipedes.

In addition to co-creating the film with her dad, Michelle helped with the Foley centipede sound effects using fruits and vegetables and designed the artwork seen in the film and the YouTube thumbnail. The whole process gave her a better understanding of movie magic and that scary films are just make-believe. With discretion, they hope parents might use Night Bugs as an introduction to horror for their children.

The fifteen minute short film was shot on an iPhone with a $50 budget. Give it a spin below.

Eric Moyer previously wrote and directed the 2005 film A Halfway House Christmas, starring Robert Romanus, and featuring cameos by Ryan Dunn and Rake Yohn and narrated by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait.
