THE HAUNTING Director Hasn’t Watched Netflix’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
While many of us see Netflix and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan’s (very loose) adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a new masterpiece, it looks like The Haunting director Jan De Bont hasn’t even seen it.
Yet.
He tells Collider: “No, I haven’t watched it yet. I mean I plan to watch it. I’ve seen other versions. There’s another one, a series that was before, another TV series, I think … I can’t remember, but that also happened … maybe 20 years ago. That’s a very different approach you’re seeing. And everybody can do its own thing. I mean why not? … Nobody can tell you what to do. I mean I like the original one.”
Boy, is he in for a treat, amirite?
Starring Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Lili Taylor, De Bont’s The Haunting acted as an “actionized” reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel. It focuses on visitors to the secluded mansion of Hill House who have been called to the isolated location by Dr. David Marrow (Neeson) as part of a study on insomnia. However, Marrow is really investigating fear, and he plans to scare the subjects, including the introverted Nell (Taylor) and the seductive Theo (Zeta-Jones). Unfortunately for Marrow and everyone staying at Hill House, the manor is actually haunted by an evil spirit out to torment its guests.
