SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK 2 Will Tap into Stephen Gammell’s Artwork Even More

Producer Guillermo del Toro and director Andre Ovredal’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 is in the works. And today, Ovredal teases the sequel will tap even more into illustrator Stephen Gammell’s visual world more than the first movie.

Øvredal tells Collider’s Witching Hour: “I learned so much on Scary Stories, but also about Scary Stories and I do think that we’ll tap even more into [illustrator Stephen] Gammell’s visual world in the sequel than we did in the first movie.”

He adds: “Production-wise we’re in a holding pattern, but not really because we’re just developing the story and the script, which is a time-consuming process because there’s no point in making a sequel to that movie unless it’s elevated and it’s great and it’s ideally better than the first movie.”

As mentioned above, Ovredal (Trollhunter) returns to direct the sequel from a screenplay written by Dan and Kevin Hageman from a screen story by Del Toro based on the books written by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell.

Here’s the synopsis for the first film if you need it: The shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large in the small town of Mill Valley for generations. It’s in a mansion that young Sarah Bellows turns her tortured life and horrible secrets into a series of scary stories. These terrifying tales soon have a way of becoming all too real for a group of unsuspecting teens who stumble upon Sarah’s spooky home.

The film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, Natalie Ganzhorn, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, and Lorraine Toussaint.

PG-13 for terror/violence, disturbing images, brief sexual references, thematic elements, language, and racial epithets, the film sports a 78% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Like the bestselling series of books that inspired it, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark opens a creepy gateway into horror for younger genre enthusiasts.
