This Day in Horror History: BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA Opened in 1992

On this day in horror history, The Godfather and Apocalypse Now director Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula was unleashed back in 1992.

Directed and produced by Coppola based on the 1897 novel by Stoker, it stars Gary Oldman as Count Dracula, Winona Ryder as Mina Harker, Anthony Hopkins as Professor Abraham Van Helsing, and Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker.

The flick follows – you guessed it – Count Dracula, who is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Lawyer Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula’s castle to finalize a deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker’s fiancée, Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, he sets off for London to track her down.

It was nominated for four Oscars and won three for Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Makeup while also being nominated for Best Art Direction.

Further cast includes Cary Elwes as Lord Arthur Holmwood, Billy Campbell as Quincey P. Morris, Sadie Frost as Lucy Westenra, Tom Waits as R. M. Renfield, and Monica Bellucci, Michaela Bercu, and Florina Kendrick as Dracula’s Brides.

The film sports a 72% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Overblown in the best sense of the word, Francis Ford Coppola’s vision of Bram Stoker’s Dracula rescues the character from decades of campy interpretations — and features some terrific performances to boot.
