This Day in Horror History: SLEEPAWAY CAMP Opened in 1983

On this day in horror history, writer-director Robert Hiltzik’s classic slasher flick Sleepaway Camp with Felissa Rose opened in 1983. It follows a young girl sent to a summer camp that becomes the site of a series of murders after her arrival.
It co-stars Katherine Kamhi, Paul DeAngelo, and Mike Kellin. Filming took place in Argyle, NY near Summit Lake at a camp formerly known as Camp Algonquin. It was filmed in 5 weeks from September – October 1982 on a budget of $350,000.
Known for its infamous twist ending, since its release, it has become a cult classic.
The film was followed by three sequels, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, and Return to Sleepaway Camp.
The slasher sports a 78% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Sleepaway Camp is a standard teen slasher elevated by occasional moments of John Waters-esque weirdness and a twisted ending.
