Exclusive: Major YouTube Star Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson Talks New Comic SUPER OFFICIAL

If you watch food-related videos on YouTube, you might be familiar with the content creator known as Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson, whose channel has over 200 million views and 1.3 million subscribers. He’s also appeared on a number of TV shows, including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, making him one of YouTube’s most successful food critics.

Patterson recently announced that he is collaborating with writer Antonio Brice and artist Caanan White on the new comic Super Official, where he will be featured as the hero. The book will contain two stories, and it will also feature a villain known as Vege-Ta-Bully, who was named by a fan who won a Name My Arch-Nemisis competition. From what we know about this sinister plant-based villain so far, it sounds like he will be a formidable opponent for Patterson to face, so we should be in store for some fun action. We’ve included some samples of White’s artwork for the embedded gallery, and looking at it should leave fans hungry for more.

We asked Patterson a series of questions about Super Official, and you can read the full interview below. Be sure to also check out the video in which he announces the project here. An Indiegogo campaign has been launched to help finance the comic, so fans of Patterson’s YouTube channel will probably want to contribute.

Super Official will be published by Ikari Press, and will be available next year, with a free preview also set to be released. If you’re interested, you can pre-order your copy now.

Dread Central: Hi Daym, can you talk about your role in the project and how you came to be involved?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: Antonio and I have been going back and forth on Instagram for a hot minute. He would show me some heat that he was working on and in the back of my mind, I am thinking, “Damn, I would like my own comic book! I can see myself as a hero and inspiring others.”

So after chopping it up with Antonio, we decided to stop messing around and bring it all to life! From that moment, I was fully vested and ready to see how we could turn my life story into HISTORY through a well written and drawn comic that all can enjoy.

DC: Were you always a comic fan?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: My cuzzo and I grew up with a plethora of comic books. I was always a Marvel fan, more than a DC fan but I had plenty to go through, plenty to trade and plenty to sell growing up. They say, “If only I knew THEN what I know NOW” I would have better preserved those comic books and held on to them vs trading them for cars and candy but from the ages of 7 – 12; that was the life I knew.

DC: Was it fun to write a story with yourself as the hero?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: It is an EPIC experience to be honest. Not only to see the talent of the artists working on the comic book with Antonio keeping me in the loop every step of the way but also to shoot ideas back and forth on the story and to see it drawn to life, took me back to being a kid all over again.

Revisiting my past every chance I get is very important to me as a father of two. I share my past often with my kids and what motivates me even more with this comic book, is the ability to show my kids something TODAY that I grew up with years ago and to see the looks on their faces alone; as they read and see their own father as the hero! THAT will bring me all the joy.

DC: Without going into spoilers, could you provide us with an overview of the story?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: A Man who loves food that is on a mission to seek and destroy all of those that go against the FOOD GRAIN! In a world where people live in peace, oblivious to the evil that surrounds them; our hero only exists to both serve and protect the innocent lives that are simply trying to get by day to day, grab a bite to eat for themselves and then go home to spend time with their loved ones….Unfortunately, there are both GOOD FOODS & EVIL FOODS that need to be addressed and THAT is what our hero does!

DC: Was the book influenced by your career as a YouTube food critic?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: Most definitely! Becoming a food critic has changed me in so many ways and I wanted to have something that could best visually tell my story. What better way to do just that than to create a comic book that is both visually stunning but also takes our readers on twisted tales through Food & Adventure! We are here to give folks a memorable experience that will make them CRAVE MORE, just like a good bite to eat!

DC: How did you feel when you saw yourself drawn by Caanan White for the first time?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: I was extremely impressed, so much so that I had to share it with everyone I knew and then again with strangers that follow my life story! Caanan captured not just ME in whole but the very essence of who I am is drawn within. I truly believe my audience will take to these stories to the point, they too will want to be part of what we cook up NEXT!!!

DC: What do you think Super Official offers which readers won’t find in other comic books?

Daymon “Daym Drops” Patterson: A broad imagination! You get life out of many comic books and well written stories any given day of the week but when it comes to the endless flow of Creative Juices, that is what this team has to offer. An emotional rollercoaster of fun for the entire family to enjoy and the best part about this particular comic book is the fact our hero is a BLACK MAN! Our Black Community needs MORE influential faces that look just like their own as a beacon of hope in this dark world. Shown in a light that is positive and uplifting for our youth for they are our future and I am honored to be part of JUST THAT with this comic book, “Super Official!”
