GREMLINS 3 Writer Promise Little Monsters Will Be Tangible Puppets

Like many of you guys, Joe Dante’s Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are some of my favortie flicks. And today, original screenwriter Chris Columbus teased that Gremlins 3 is still in the works. And the creatures will NOT be CGI.

Columbus tells Collider: “I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI… We had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.”

Sounds good to me!

Steven Spielberg produced the original film which Dante directed. Columbus penned the script before writing The Goonies. Since then, he has become a big-time director, helming films like Home Alone, and the first two Harry Potter movies.

For those who just can’t wait for Gremlins 3, HBO Max has an animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai coming soon. That said, the series still doesn’t have a release date or an official trailer. But we’ll keep you updated.

Gremlins begins when a gadget salesman looking for a special gift for his son finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper warns him to never expose the mogwai to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.
