Horror History: BLADE: TRINITY With Wesley Snipes Opened In 2004

On this day in horror history, Blade: Trinity with Wesley Snipes, Jessica Biel, and Ryan Reynolds opened in 2004. David S. Goyer, who also penned the screenplays for the first two films, wrote, produced, and directed.

The war between humans and vampires continues in the third and final film in the series. Determined to lead her compatriots to victory, vampire leader Danica Talos frames Blade for murder. Now, Blade must team up with a band of rogue vampire hunters to save humanity from his most challenging enemy yet: Dracula.

Dominic Purcell co-starred as Dracula with Kris Kristofferson as Abraham Whistler and Parker Posey as Danica Talos. Paul “Triple H” co-starred along with Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), James Remar (Dexter), and Patton Oswalt.

Snipes also produced. In 2005, Snipes sued New Line Cinema claiming they didn’t pay his full salary. He also claimed he was intentionally left out of casting and filmmaking decisions, despite being a credited producer. Snipes also hated that his screen time was reduced in favor of Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel.

Budgeted at $65M, it snagged $52M in the U.S. and $132M worldwide. This matched the first film’s gross but fell behind Del Toro’s sequel, which earned $150M worldwide. That said, it is the worst-reviewed film in the trilogy. It sports a 26% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Louder, campier, and more incoherent than its predecessors, Blade: Trinity seems content to emphasize style over substance and rehash familiar themes.

In 2008, Blade director Stephen Norrington was developing a prequel trilogy featuring Stephen Dorff’s Deacon Frost. Marvel Studios announced in July 2019 that it would reboot Blade into the MCU with Mahershala Ali as the title character.
