New TRUE BLOOD Reboot Happening Over at HBO

HBO is developing a True Blood reboot with Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Better yet, creator Alan Ball will return.

TVLine reports Aguirre-Sacasa will co-write the pilot with Jami O’Brien (NOS4A2). Aguirre-Sacasa and O’Brien will also serve as exec producers along with Ball.

HBO declined to comment.

Alan Ball (American Beauty, Six Feet Under) created the series based on Charlaine Harris’ best-selling novels, True Blood centered on a small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse. Already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read minds, it doesn’t exactly help her reputation when she falls for a 173-year-old vampire who has come out of the coffin along with many of his undead comrades now that synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren’t wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie’s boss, who carries a torch for her.

The first season sports a 61% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: It’s unabashedly soapy and it occasionally wavers in its social commentary, but True Blood is a gory, sexy genre romp with a strong supporting cast.

Aguirre-Sacasa is also heading HBO Max’s ‘horror-tinged, coming-of-rage’ Pretty Little Liars reboot. The new PLL is said to feature a new story and new characters. Aguirre-Sacasa will pen the script. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo will executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa. Freeform attempted two spinoffs Pretty Little Liars: Ravenswood and The Perfectionists. But each spin-off only managed to produce a single season. Let’s hope this new one’s successful. I guess.
