Horror History: INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY Opened in 2018
On this day in horror history, Insidious: The Last Key opened in 2018.
The film follows brilliant parapsychologist Elise Rainier who receives a disturbing phone call from a man who claims his house is haunted. Even more disturbing is the address, the home Elise grew up in as a child. Accompanied by her two investigative partners, Rainier travels to Five Keys to confront and destroy her greatest fear — the demon that she accidentally set free years earlier.
Adam Robitel directed the film and Leigh Whannell penned the script. Jason Blum produced along with Oren Peli, and James Wan. Lin Shaye reprises her role as Elise Rainier along with series regulars Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell. Spencer Locke joins them this time around along with Caitlin Gerard, and Bruce Davison.

Insidious: The Last Key grossed $29.3M in its opening weekend. That marks the second-highest opening of the series behind Chapter 2. It managed to earn $67.6M in the US and $100.1M elsewhere for a worldwide total of $167.7M. It’s the first film of the series to gross $100M overseas. And ultimately, the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing Chapter 2’s $161M. All on a budget of just $10M.
It sports a 33% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Insidious: The Last Key offers franchise star Lin Shaye another welcome opportunity to take the lead, but her efforts aren’t enough to rescue this uninspired sequel.
