SEARCHING Sequel Will Feature New Characters; Snags Directors

Producer Aneesh Chaganty’s Searching sequel finds its directors. The editors of the original, Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, will make their directorial debuts.

The sequel begins production this spring with a new set of characters. Merrick and Johnson will pen the script, based on a story by Chaganty and Ohanian.

Chaganty says: “With such restrictive visual parameters, a movie like Searching 2 requires a fresh visual style to separate it from the original. I’ve contributed what I can to this growing sub-genre. But if there’s anyone on the planet with the potential to take it even further, it’s Nick and Will, who were there from the beginning.”

Producer Natalie Qasabian adds: “On Searching, Will and Nick pioneered a new visual language. And pushed the boundaries of what editors could contribute to a film. We are lucky and beyond excited to be working with them in their new roles as writers and directors on the sequel.”

Qasabian and Chaganty will also produce with Sev Ohanian, Adam Sidman, and Timur Bekmambetov (Unfriended) who produced the original. Jo Henriquez will executive produce and Congyu E will serve as a co-producer.

The original film followed a father desperate to find his 16-year-old daughter. When the police investigation leads nowhere, he decides to search the one place that no one else has: Margot’s laptop. Hoping to trace her digital footprints, he contacts her friends, looks at photos, and videos for any possible clues to her whereabouts.
