EXPLORERS Lands New Collector’s Edition Blu-ray in May
Shout Factory’s Shout Select line will release Joe Dante’s Explorers with Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray on May 25th. Special features will be revealed later. But you can check out the killer cover art below.
Dante (Gremlins, The Burbs) directs the 1985 sci-fi fantasy adventure from a script by Eric Luke (Gargoyles). Hawke and Phoenix made their debuts in the film. Jason Presson (Gremlins 2: The New Batch) co-stars. Industrial Light & Magic (Star Wars) created the visual effects. Rob Bottin (The Thing) handled the make-up effects.

Hawke stars as a kid who spends his free time watching sci-fi films, and reading comic books. One night, his affinity for all things fantastical yields a real result. He has a vivid dream about technology, and his science-loving friend (Phoenix) manages to create a working spacecraft. Joined by their buddy (Presson), the boys take off into outer space and encounter some very odd extraterrestrial life.
The film sports a 77% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: With a terrific young cast (including Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix) and some typically energetic work from director Joe Dante, Explorers soars past its ’80s kiddie flick competitors with wit, good-looking effects, and tons of charm.
