BLADE Reboot Will Almost Certainly Be Rated PG-13

We’ve been following the new Blade reboot (in the works at Marvel) since the project was first announced. Horror fans have long loved the original superhero franchise which was made into three feature films between 1998 and 2004. All of them starred Wesely Snipes as the titular anti-hero–and all of them were rated R.

Perhaps unfortunately, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that the upcoming Blade reboot (which will star Mahershala Ali and John West Jr.) will be a PG-13 affair.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige explained the studio’s aversion to R-Rated movies–Deadpool being the only notable exception to the rule.

Over the years, Feige has maintained that Marvel Studios hasn’t felt a need to delve into R-rated territory. Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which brought Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige and Disney’s Bob Iger have confirmed that property will remain R-rated, and the studio is currently developing Deadpool 3. Still, Feige said Deadpool 3 will be an exception to the rule.

There you have it; you don’t need to be a genius to read between the lines!

Of course, the new Blade won’t be officially rated until the film is completed and submitted to the MPAA. The reboot doesn’t even have a target release date, so anything can (in theory) happen between now and then. Maybe someone needs to start a petition demanding the new Blade be R-rated, just like the original movies. Hell, I’d sign it!
