Danny Elfman Explains Why There Will Never Be an OINGO BOINGO Reunion

Most horror fans know Danny Elfman as the composer of choice for filmmaker Tim Burton–and too many others to name. But before working with orchestras scoring soundtracks, Elfman held major street cred as the passionate and frenetic frontman of the alt-rock outfit Oingo Boingo.

Established in 1979, Oingo Boingo became kings of the Halloween season hosting annual concerts in Southern California. The band official retired after a series of “Farewell” outings in 1995. But even though Elfman was set to return to stages with an orchestra in 2020 (with over 20 dates scheduled before his plans were dashed by the Coronavirus–including a headlining gig a Coachella) fans hoping for an eventual Oingo Boingo reunion will have to temper their expectations.

Elfman sat down for an extensive interview with the folks at Inverse where he talked about how COVID-19 is influencing his current artistic output. It’s a fantastic read that can be enjoyed in its entirety, HERE.

When asked about the possibility of an Oingo Boingo reunion, however, Elfman didn’t mince words. There isn’t going to be one. But it’s not because of any feud among band-members or anything salacious. It all has to do with Elfman’s hearing. He told Inverse:

“There’s not going to be an Oingo Boingo reunion. Orchestras are simply not that loud. Being on stage, I was getting used to in-ear monitors. That’s the big change in my life, being able to stand in front of the drums and not kill my hearing. I did reach a point where I never wanted to be on a live stage again. But with this new technology, I think I can manage better because you have the ability to turn yourself down.”

Danny Elfman’s latest single, “Love in the Time of Covid” is out now on ANTI- & Epitaph Records; listen and download the track, HERE.
