THE RING Director Joins New Netflix Movie from Author of GAME OF THRONES
Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, A Cure for Wellness) is teaming with Netflix on an adaptation of Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin’s Sandkings.
Collider reports Dennis Kelly (Utopia) will adapt the 1979 novelette.
Verbinski says: “One of the screenplays is based on a George R.R. Martin short story called Sandkings, which is this brilliant little twisted short story that I love. And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]… And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I’m kind of excited about that.”
John Baldecchi (The Mexican) will produce.
The story follows a wealthy man who collects dangerous animals. One day, he purchases a terrarium with creatures that grow to fill the environment they’re kept in. When he makes them fight over food, they escape and take over his house.

First published in 1979 in the sci-fi magazine Omni, Sandkings won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards. Martin intended for it to be a series, but that never happened. That said, the story’s set in the same fictional universe as Nightflyers.
Sandkings was adapted into an episode of The Outer Limits with Beau Bridges. And a graphic novel by Doug Moench, Pat Broderick, and Neal McPheeters.
Verbinski’s last genre outing was A Cure for Wellness. It centered on a Wall Street stockbroker (Dane DeHaan) who travels to a remote location in the Swiss Alps to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious wellness center. He soon suspects that the miraculous treatments are not what they seem. His sanity is tested when he unravels the spa’s terrifying secrets and finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all of the guests there longing for a cure.
