Horror History: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Premiered Back in 1997

On this day in horror history, Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Gellar premiered back in 1997.

Based on the film of the same name, Gellar stars Buffy. She’s a Slayer in a long line of young women chosen for a specific mission. Seek out and destroy vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy establishes a group of supportive friends including Willow, Xander, and Cordelia. Her battles are frequent since her town sits atop a gateway to the realm of the demons.

Alyson Hannigan co-starred along with Charisma Carpenter, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Not to mention Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Stewart Head, James Marsters, Marc Blucas, Emma Caulfield, and Amber Benson.

The first season sports a 92% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Buffy slays her way into the pop-culture lexicon in a debut season that lays the groundwork for one of TV’s greatest supernatural teen dramas.

Joss Whedon created the show. Jane Espenson Later co-executive produced along with David Fury, David Greenwalt, Doug Petrie, Marti Noxon, and David Solomon.
