Saban Snags Rights to HIDE AND SEEK Remake Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Saban Films has taken North American, UK and Irish rights to CJ ENM’s Joel David Moore directed horror/thriller Hide and Seek starring Golden Globe® winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, The 12th Man, Match Point), Jacinda Barrett (Bloodline, Poseidon, Ladder 49), Joe Pantoliano (The SopranosMemento) and Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage, The Deuce).  The socially-minded horror-thriller was developed, financed and produced by CJ ENM, Korea’s leading film studio of Bong Joon-ho’s ground-breaking, multiple Oscar®-winning film Parasite.

Synopsis:
When a wealthy businessman follows a lead to find his missing brother, he dives headlong into a twisted underworld of squatters and vagrants that threatens to tear apart his family as he struggles to maintain his sanity.

The film is a remake of the 2013 Korean social horror-thriller that was a monster hit, reaching 5.6 million admissions and grossing over $35m at the Korean box office. Check out the trailer and synopsis for the original below.

Synopsis:
Strange symbols and worsening nightmares plague an already troubled man after he tries to solve his estranged brother’s disappearance.

In addition to directing, Joel David Moore wrote the English-language screenplay adaptation. The original Korean version was written and directed by Huh Jung.

Hide and Seek is a social horror-thriller that builds upon themes related to the widening gap between the upper 1% and the lower class.  As population in urban areas balloon and real estate prices skyrocket, lower-income segments of society are finding themselves continually getting pushed out. This film explores the question of “what if” when those left marginalized decide to take matters, and homes, into their own hands.

CJ’s Miky Lee, Jinnie Choi, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko served as executive producers alongside Joel David Moore with Yeonu Choi producing the film.

“We are excited to be working with Joel on his remake of Hide and Seek, which had a lasting impression on us all,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “Jonathan gives a chilling performance. We can’t wait for our audiences to see his take on the story and its social commentary around the crisis in affordable housing.”

Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal for Saban Films with ICM and CAA Media Finance on behalf of filmmakers.  CJ ENM is handling sales in Asia, with Hyde Park handling worldwide outside of North America and Asia.

Saban Films continues to grow its presence in the industry, remaining active in the acquisition, production and distribution space. The company’s successes have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman starring Hilary Swank, to two of the biggest Fathom events with horror icon and heavy metal mastermind Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell last year and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which the company partnered on after coming on board at script stage.
