Safdie Brothers Producing New PAUL REUBENS Documentary
The Safdie brothers (Uncut Gems) will produce a two-part documentary about Paul Reubens for HBO. Most know Reubens best as Pee-wee Herman in Tim Burton’s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. But we also know him for his roles in films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batman Returns, and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows series.
And let’s not forget, voice of Max (credited as Paul Mall) in Flight of the Navigator.
Anyhow, Reubens reached out to the Safdies about a “dark” Pee-wee movie last year. But it looks like this is what they ended up with. Works for me. Especially if they don’t shy away from his dark-ass criminal history…

Reubens said in a statement: “I’ve been working with HBO since they were called Home Box Office! I’m honored and excited to continue my long history there. I love HBO, but I’m not going to marry them.”
Matt Wolf (Spaceship Earth) will direct. Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Irishman) produces with the Safdies and Sebastian Bear-McClard (Uncut Gems).
Wolf says: “We all know Pee-wee Herman; it’s time for the world to meet Paul Reubens. I can’t wait to share his story.”
Koskoff added: “I’m thrilled to partner with HBO on Paul’s incredible life story. He is a once-in-a-generation talent whose brilliance created a pop culture phenomenon. Audiences will be inspired and entertained by Paul’s creativity, resilience, and determination as they get to know the person behind the iconic character.”
What’s your favorite Paul Reubens performance – other than Pee-Wee?
