Horror History: Happy Birthday To The Director Of ELM STREET 4 Renny Harlin!

On this day in horror history, Renny Harlin was born in Finland in 1959. Harlin is best known around here for helming A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and Deep Blue Sea. And let’s not forget the underrated Cutthroat Island.

But most know him as the director behind big-budget action classics. These include Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and underrated The Long Kiss Goodnight.

His other genre credits include Prison, Mindhunters, Exorcist: The Beginning, The Covenant, and Devil’s Pass. He also helmed The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Driven, Cleaner, 12 Rounds, The Legend of Hercules, and Skiptrace.

While there is a lot to pick from, my favorite Renny Harlin movie is still A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. It begins after the death of Nancy Thompson. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) reappears in the dreams of the surviving Dream Warriors. After completing his revenge, Krueger uses Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox), to gain access to new victims in order to sate his murderous needs.

The film sports a 52% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master marks a relative high point in this franchise’s bumpy creative journey, although the original remains far superior.
