BIRD BOX: New Spanish Spin-Off Starts Shooting Later This Year

Netflix just announced that Bird Box is back. Kind of. Alex and David Pastor will write and direct a new Spanish spin-off set in the world of the film/novel. The untitled original movie kicks off production in Spain sometime later this year.

The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they’ll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them — and complete the trip blindfolded.

Susanne Bier directed Bird Box from a script by Eric Heisserer based on Josh Malerman’s (A House at the Bottom of a Lake) novel. Rated R for violence, bloody images, language, and brief sexuality, it sports a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.

He even directed Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, which was Andrew LaSane's Scarred for Life pick, which is one of Terry's favorite movies. We chat about his long history in cinema; about how he started working with Romero to some insights into Tales from the Darkside. And we discuss his latest work, the novel Residue: Paramentals Rising, which is a sequel to the Netflix show. After learning about his horror history--including a memorable viewing of Night of the Living Dead--we find out why The Haunting terrified him as a twelve year old.
