Because of SAW, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER Is Now a Comedy

James Wan’s I Know What You Did Last Summer series is coming. And today, IKWYDLS star Freddie Prinze Jr. says Wan’s Saw turned the slasher into a comedy.

He tells Collider: “I heard they’re making an I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series. I don’t know how they’re gonna make it scary because James Wan, who I love, made those movies not scary anymore because he did Saw and changed the whole game up. Now, my movie is a comedy, but whatever, it’s cool.”

Prinze’s comments sound strange. But I totally get it. Yes, compared to the brutal Saw series, I Know What You Did Last Summer is… kinda campy. But I still LOVE it!

Executive produced by Wan and written by Sara Goodman (Preacher) based on Lois Duncan’s novel, the new series will be a modern take on the 1997 film and sport the same premise. In a town full of secrets, a mysterious killer stalks a group of teenagers a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night.

Sonya Balmores stars with Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, Brooke Bloom, and Bill Heck. The Boy (no, the other one) director Craig William Macneill will helm and executive produce the pilot. Wan and Goodman executive produce with Shay Hatten, Neil Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Rob Hackett, Michael Clear, and Erik Feig.

Kevin Williamson (Scream) wrote the original film. It followed four friends a year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water. Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter and a man with a meat hook runs down Barry (Ryan Phillippe). The bloodletting only increases from there. The killer with the hook stalks Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).
