MIDNIGHT MASS Star Talks Filming New Netflix Series During Lockdown
Netflix and Mike Flanagan’s new miniseries Midnight Mass is in the can. And today, star Hamish Linklater (Legion) recalls filming the wild, wonderful new series.
He tells Collider: “We finished that just before Christmas. It was really so wonderful because it was such challenging circumstances. That’s a wonderful creator, in Mike Flanagan, and he put together a wonderful ensemble of people. We were all in our Canadian lockdown, all the way from home, in these foreign homes. You’d come to work and you take off your PPE for long enough to do a scene, and then put yourself away again. It was wild. We were in this shutdown situation, and then we were actually allowed to do the jobs that we love to do for a brief second. It was just such an exhale. It really was a wonderful experience.”

While not much is known about the seven-episode series, we do know it centers on an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events (and frightening omens) after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. Also, Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes) recently teased it’s like Salem’s Lot meets The Perfect Storm.
No character names or descriptions have been revealed. But the series has gathered up its killer cast. It includes – get ready – The Haunting of Hill House stars Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, Robert Longstreet, and Annabeth Gish along with Alex Essoe (Doctor Sleep), Zach Gilford (The Purge: Anarchy), Hamish Linklater (Legion), Michael Trucco (Hunter Killer), Samantha Sloyan (Grey’s Anatomy), Rahul Abburi (Killer Ransom), Crystal Balint (The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco), Matt Biedel (Altered Carbon), Rahul Kohli (Supergirl), Kristin Lehman (The Chronicles of Riddick), Igby Rigney (Blue Bloods), and Annarah Shephard.
Flanagan recently released a (super) lengthy series of tweets detailing how they pulled off the shoot during COVID. Check out his full statement HERE.
