THE NORTHMAN Stars Says New Rob Eggers Movie is an Enormous Masterpiece

The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers’ Viking revenge epic The Northman with Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants) wrapped shooting recently. And today, co-star Ralph Ineson teases the flick is “enormous” and “a masterpiece.”

He tells NME: “It’s an enormous movie. I saw a four-minute montage of some of the stuff they’d shot and I was really blown away. The marriage of Rob Eggers’ imagination and Viking folklore. I think it will be a bit of a masterpiece, to be honest. If I was to put bets on any film being an absolute banger, it would be that one.”

Plot details are scarce. But we do know that The Northman takes place in the 10th century. It centers on a Nordic prince seeking revenge after his father is murdered.

Co-written with Icelandic poet/novelist Sjón, The Northman does not have an official release date but filming recently started near the eastern coast of Ireland.

Taylor-Joy says: “[Robert Eggers and I] have now been friends longer than we have been co-workers. Getting the opportunity to create art together again is amazing. We have both grown so much apart and now we get to grow back together. Im so proud to be a part of this project… we will be presenting to the world something it genuinely hasn’t seen before. I just feel so humbled I get to be a part of it.”

Taylor-Joy’s co-stars include Alexander Skarsgård (The Stand), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Nicole Kidman (The Others), Ethan Hawke (The Purge), and Björk.

Kidman also spoke about her deep commitment to Eggers’ vision: “I’m heading off to do that in November. I’m deeply committed to filmmakers that I call auteurs. They’re so powerful in their visions and their abilities. I made that pledge when I was about 14 years old, that I would travel the world and work with different nationalities in different countries and different genres with different stories. That’s my calling.”

She adds: “So, to have been asked to do it is a privilege. A lot of the things, as an actor, you’ve gotta be asked to do them. It’s Robert Eggers’ story and his vision. I hopefully bring something to the equation but I’m there to … contribute.”

Focus Features will release The Northman domestically. Universal Pictures will distribute internationally. Lars Knudsen and Mark Huffam produced.
