Exclusive: Adam Wingard Suspects Barbara Crampton Actually IS a Vampire!

We got a lot of mileage out of our 10-minute interview with Adam Wingard during a recent press junket for Godzilla vs Kong! We talked about the upcoming film’s lack of a post-credits scene, as well as the absence of Charles Dance (who played the main villain, Alan Jonah, in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters).

But we also took a detour out of the MonsterVerse to discuss Wingard’s past projects, including 2016’s Blair Witch, 2014’s The Guest, and we even touched on 2011’s You’re Next–specifically, that film’s star, Barbara Crampton.

Crampton, who was a leading lady in the 1980s, credits Wingard for revitalizing her career in the 21st Century for casting her in You’re Next. She’s already had an incredible year in 2021; Sacrifice was a hit and her latest film, Jakob’s Wife, got rave reviews out of SXSW 2021.

You can read our full exchange about Barbara Crampton below the trailer and synopsis for Jakob’s Wife.

As Anne is increasingly torn between her enticing new existence and her life before, the body count grows and Jakob realizes he will have to fight for the wife he took for granted.

Directed by Travis Stevens (Girl on the Third Floor), he co-wrote the film with Mark Steensland (The Special) and Kathy Charles (Castle Freak). Jakob’s Wife stars Barbara Crampton (Re-AnimatorYou’re Next), Larry Fessenden (HabitStake Land), Nyisha Bell (Coming 2 America), Mark Kelly (The Hot Zone), Sarah Lind (Wolfcop), Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Vamp), Bonnie Aarons (The Nun, The Conjuring 2), and Phil Brooks (aka CM Punk, Girl on the Third Floor).

Dread Central: We love Barbara Crampton at Dread Central, and she’s had such a great year with Sacrifice coming out and Jakob’s Wife getting all of these wonderful, rave reviews at SXSW. As someone she credits for really revitalizing her career, how does it feel looking at her, enjoying this creative renaissance?

Adam Wingard: I’m just so proud of her. She’s such a great person and such a great actor. I’m glad to see she’s really getting into the swing of things. You look at that new movie that she’s in, Jakob’s Wife, and you’re like, “Is Barbara Crampton maybe a vampire in real life?” because she’s just as gorgeous as she was in the ’80s. She’s literally not aged at all. So, you kind of have to wonder about it. She’s an executive producer on that film, so is that her subtlety disclosing to us that she is an immortal vampire woman? I don’t know.
