Chris Walas Reveals New Alternate Gizmo & Gremlins Designs

The Fly and Arachnophobia special effects artist Chris Walas also worked on Joe Dante and Chris Columbus’s Christmas creature feature classic Gremlins. And the other day, he took to Twitter to share some alternate designs!

He tweets: “Found my very first rough sketches for the Mogwai. I think you can see the tarsier influence here.” Plus “An abandoned Gremlin design sketch.”

These sketches come on the heels of Gremlins star Zach Galligan saying he thinks Gremlins 3 is inevitable. Especially if HBO Max’s upcoming original animated series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai gets “Mandalorian-big.”

He says: “They are doing a ten-part animated series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai for HBO Max coming out later this year. You just simply have to look at the nature of the way large entertainment corporations deal with franchises and properties over the years and decades. It’s not difficult to make an educated guess that the cartoon is a way of seeding the younger generation that’s not aware of it. If it is successful, if it gets like Mandalorian-big, then I think Gremlins 3 is inevitable.”

And speaking of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. HBO Max’s upcoming original animated series has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere.

It takes place in 1920s Shanghai and reveals how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside. They encounter and sometimes battle, colorful monsters, and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family. And uncover a legendary treasure, they are also pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
