THE LAST STARFIGHTER 2 Concept Trailer Arrives with New Title and Art
The Last Starfighter sequel screenwriter Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has revealed a new concept reel with artwork and the title, The Last Starfighters.
Check out the concept reel below.
Whitta worked with original screenwriter Jonathan Betuel and artist Matt Allsopp to put together the concept trailer which Whitta revealed in a live stream on his Twitch channel. Chris Tilton contributed music from Craig Safan’s original score.
Whitta teased he closer than anyone else’s ever been to getting a new movie made. He says: “We are, I believe, very, very close. Closer than anyone has ever been to making a new Last Starfighter movie, like right on the one-yard line. After pushing the boulder uphill for many years we are very, very close. I can’t really say anything more other than that because there’s all stuff happening behind the scenes, there’s things I can’t tell you, but we’re very, very close and I believe it will happen.”

He adds: “This was a huge, huge movie for me as a kid…It’s a fan favorite since the 1980s when it first came out, a lot of people from my generation remember it, love it. It’s very well loved in Hollywood as well, anytime I would go to a general meeting at a studio or a producer’s office they would say a common question you get asked, ‘So Gary if you could do anything what would you do?’ I would say ‘I would do Starfighter,’ and they would light up and say ‘Oh god yes we want to do that too.‘”
The original film follows everyday teenager Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) who finally achieves the high score on his favorite arcade game, Starfighter, and meets the game’s designer, who reveals he created the game as a training ground for developing and recruiting actual pilots to help fight a war in space. Whisked away from the banality of his trailer park life to a distant alien planet, Alex struggles to use his video game-playing skills to pilot a real ship, with real lives at stake.
It sports a 74% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: The plot is as barebones a space movie will allow, but The Last Starfighter captures an era and eager style of filmmaking well.
Directed by Nick Castle (The Shape from John Carpenter’s Halloween), it co-stars stars Robert Preston, Catherine Mary Stewart, Dan O’Herlihy, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. It was Preston’s final theatrical role.
