Horror History: Wan & Whannell’s INSIDIOUS Was Released Back in 2011

On this day in horror history, James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s Insidious opened back in 2011. It tells the tale of parents (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) who take drastic measures when their comatose son is possessed by a malevolent entity.

The film sports a 66% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Aside from a shaky final act, Insidious is a very scary and very fun haunted house thrill ride.

Wan directed Insidious from a screenplay penned by his Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Lin Shaye star. It’s rated PG-13 for thematic material, violence, terror and frightening images, and brief strong language.

Insidious had its world premiere in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010. The film opened with $13.3M, making it #3 at the US box office behind Hop and Source Code. On a budget of $1.5 million, it has since grossed a total of $54M in the US and $43Minternationally, for a total of $97M worldwide. Insidious was one of the most profitable films of 2011.

Insidious spawned the sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2 in 2013. The prequels Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key were released in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

Ethan Hawke turned down the role of Josh Lambert, which ultimately went to Patrick Wilson. Hawke would later appear in Blumhouse’s Sinister in 2012.

As we all know, Blumhouse is moving forward with a 5th Chapter of the franchise.

Patrick Wilson will make his directorial debut. Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) will pen the script based on a story by Whannell. The film will follow the Lamberts 10 years after the last installment, as Dalton (Ty Simpkins, Jurassic World) begins college.

Jason Blum will produce along with Wan and Whannell. Oren Peli will also produce. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Steven Schneider will executive produce.
