Resident Evil Star Says New Movie Will Be “Super Violent” And “Brilliantly Nineties”

The Stranger: Prey at Night director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will adapt the first two games. And today, star Tom Hopper (SAS: Red Notice) says the movie will be “super violent” and “brilliantly nineties.”

He tells Collider: “I think from an aesthetic point of view, I think the games really influence this well. It is an aesthetic that, certainly when we were shooting it, that I was like, ‘Man, it feels like the game.’ I’m really hoping that fans of the game take something nice away from it, that it’s the game plus more.

This level of authenticity was apparent in Roberts’ script. As for Hopper’s research process, Roberts told Hopper to play the game.

He says: “‘The one thing I want you to do is to get into the game, start playing the game.’ I was like, ‘This is the best research I’ve ever done for a movie. This is the best, I just get to go and play a game.’ I got the old PlayStation out, and got the game, and started playing it. Tell you what, I pooed my pants at least once. It’s incredibly scary […] we’ve tried to do that in the movie, I think we’ve tried to give the audience that feel, that it feels like a horror that you’re in, that you’re involved in.”

Roberts’ (47 Meters Down, Strangers: Prey at Night) reboot will be an official origin story. One with faithful ties to the games set in 1998 on a fateful night in Raccoon City.

Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) stars as Claire Redfield with Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and also Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine.

Tom Hopper joins them as Albert Wesker with Neal McDonough as William Birkin, and Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons. Chad Rook rounds out the cast as Richard Aiken with Lily Gao as Ada Wong, and Marina Mazepa as Lisa Trevor.

Robert Kulzer will once again produce this new entry in the series along with James Harris, and Hartley Gorenstein. Martin Moszkowicz and Victor Hadida are executive producers and Alex Westmore and Colin Scully will oversee the project.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City hits theaters on September 9th. Netflix is also currently developing a  live-action series and an animated series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness will be unleashed soon. Stay tuned!
