YOU Author Caroline Kepnes Teases New Details on Third Book
Most horror fans got to know You in the form of Netflix’s dark and addictive TV series. Two seasons deep, it’s based on a series of novels by Caroline Kepnes. The first book was released in 2014. Hidden Bodies followed in 2016. Now, the third installment in what’s expected to be a quadrilogy, You Love Me is slated for release on April 6th.
If you’re not familiar with the story, the trailers for Season 1 and Season 2 are below.
Synopsis:
YOU, a Netflix Original Series, is the riveting and hypnotic story of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), an obsessive yet brilliant New Yorker, who exploits today’s technology to win the heart of Beck (Elizabeth Lail) amid the growing suspicions of her best friend Peach (Shay Mitchell). Joe transforms himself from stalker to boyfriend while doing whatever it takes to eliminate all obstacles standing in his way — even if it means murder. Set in today’s 24/7 hyper-connected world, YOU explores how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation online and in real life.

In an interview with Variety, Kepnes dished up some tasty details on You Love Me:
“I left readers hanging in 2016. I left this character locked up and anticipating so much. I’ve been dying to do this for the readers for a long time. I wanted a break in between, and I wanted people to sit with where he was. We find him in this new life, walking into a library, and there is a woman librarian. That was what was really exciting for this book, to see him tangle with […] a responsible, grounded adult.”
She continues:
“None of us are our best social selves right now, and in that way social media is so prescient and maybe deceptive. n the book, Joe uses social media in an antisocial way, but he is also using it to look for happiness and love. It’s interesting for me to write, because he’s trying so bad to be a part of things. He doesn’t have that one person to text. It’s that stark loneliness that’s amplified by him being exposed to the life in our feeds.”
As for the TV series, Netflix did greenlight You Season 3 before the pandemic. It’s uncertain if plans have changed, but we’ll keep you posted on all You-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned and check back often!
