James Wan’s New Deep-Sea Horror Spin-Off THE TRENCH Canceled
The terror of the Deep won’t be felt anytime soon. WB and DC’s upcoming slate is moving forward without James Wan’s Aquaman spinoff, The Trench.
Warner Bros. and DC said: “As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including … The Trench will not be moving forward. We thank our partners … James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The project will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.”
The horror spin-off followed the deadly amphibious creatures from Wan’s Aquaman. Wan was producing Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald’s script with Peter Safran.
DC is leaving the door open to revisit the film in the future. But sources say when DC’s upcoming slate didn’t have a natural spot for The Trench, execs believed it was best not to leave Wan hanging in development Hell. The horror spinoff was considered for streaming, but it’s more of a standalone story without a strong tie to the DC universe. Plus sources say Wan’s upcoming Aquaman 2 is enough.

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, and Willem Dafoe.
Once the most advanced civilization on Earth, Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people — and then the surface world.
Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm’s half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.
Aquaman producer Peter Safran told THR back in March 2019 that the spinoff would come out well in advance of Aquaman 2:
He said: “We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
