“Dissecting Horror” Special Edition Now Planned for 4/20 with THE BANISHING Creatives
In addition to our next regularly scheduled episode of “Dissecting Horror” with the creatives behind Jakob’s Wife on April 21st (link below) we’ll be holding a special edition panel for The Banishing on Tuesday, April 20th at 2 pm PST!

Synopsis:
From acclaimed director Chris Smith (Creep, Severance, Triangle) comes The Banishing, which tells the true story of the most haunted house in England. A young reverend and his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. A vengeful spirit haunts the little girl and threatens to tear the family apart. So the reverend and his wife confront their beliefs. They must turn to black magic by seeking the help of a famous Occultist…or risk losing their daughter.
The Banishing panelists include director Christopher Smith, director of photography Sarah Cunningham and composers Pablo Clements and James Griffith of Toydrum. I’ll be moderating. The Banishing is now available on Shudder.

Dread Central and Jordan von Netzer of Projection PR launched Dissecting Horror on April 15th, 2020 with a panel focused on horror film scores. Since then, they have produced panels spotlighting stunt coordinators, visual/special effects and the creatives behind Followed, Cruiser, 12 Hour Shift, Don’t Look Back, Hunter Hunter, Willy’s Wonderland, Wrong Turn, Dreamcatcher, Making Monsters, and Parallel.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
CHRISTOPHER SMITH (Director)
Chris Smith is a highly established British filmmaker. He directed some of Britain’s most popular genre films to date. In 2004, Chris wrote and also directed his debut, Creep. It follows a woman trapped on the London underground and hunted by a mysterious attacker.
His next film was the comedy-horror Severence, which screened at festivals all over the world. In 2009, Chris directed the mystery thriller, Triangle, followed by the epic medieval action thriller Black Death in 2010, which starred Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean. Chris then went onto write and direct the family-comedy, Get Santa, starring Jim Broadbent and then Detour in 2016.
Recently, Chris has been focusing on TV, and last year directed episodes of Sony’s highly-anticipated TV reboot of Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider.

SARAH CUNNINGHAM (Director of Photography)
“By turns fuzzy-dreamy and jarringly vivid” was how the Hollywood Reporter described Sarah’s cinematography on Flatland, Jenna Bass’ contemporary feminist western set in South Africa’s Karoo desert, which in 2019 opened the Panorama programme of the Berlinale and won best African feature at the Jo’burg International Film Festival. In 2017 Sarah’s 1st feature, Miguel Clara Vasconcelos’ Encontro Silencioso, won Best Portuguese Feature at IndieLisboa, the country’s largest national film festival. Her third feature, The Banishing, is a UK production.
Sarah’s work has screened in festivals all over the world, from Berlin to Cannes, Toronto to Rio. Her two self-directed documentaries, Birds Get Vertigo Too and Like Love, picked up more than a dozen awards, including for cinematography, while the BSC has showcased her work in their Emerging Cinematographers Night.
Sarah is passionate, dedicated, and keenly sensitive to accidental beauty. She is equally at home with film as with digital. And loves being able to work in different contexts and languages.
Sarah is a founding member of CUT IT. A crew-led initiative that is challenging our failure as an industry to act proportionately in response to the climate crisis. She is a member of Illuminatrix, a UK collective of experienced female cinematographers, believing that visibility matters.
On her journey to becoming a DP she has worked as operator and second unit DP for the likes of Robbie Ryan and Ken Loach, Guy Maddin and Gavin Finney. She graduated with distinction in cinematography from the prestigious national film school of France, La Fémis. And previously read Classics at Cambridge.

TOYDRUM (Composers)
Toydrum is the Brighton-based organic electronic music duo, comprised of Pablo Clements and James Griffith. The pair met in 2007 when they were both a part of the British electronic outfit Unkle. After parting ways with Unkle in 2012, Clements and Griffith started working together as Toydrum. Releasing new music on their Underscore label and pursuing projects in film and television.
In 2014 James and Pablo released their first EP, Distant Focus Vol. 1, collaborating with artists including Gavin Clark and Joel Wells, followed a year later with the critically acclaimed album Evangelist. Songs from the album featured heavily on the soundtrack of Shane Meadows’ This is England ’90’, and The Virtues. Following releases include My Eye On You (To Reinvision), an album full of reworked Gavin Clark songs, featuring guest artists Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, and Trentemoller, and Fields of Madness a collection of cinematic instrumentals, and collaborations with Alex Mass from Black Angels and James Edward Bagshaw from The Temples.

Toydrum’s film work includes Alice Lowe’s comedy-horror debut feature, Prevenge, which received glowing reviews at TIFF and also Venice film festivals. Invada Records released the soundtrack. And featured in both Empire and Fact Magazine’s score of the year lists in 2018. Other credits include thriller London Fields, starring Billy Bob Thornton and also Johnny Depp; Future World, starring and directed by James Franco; teen comedy A Guide to Second Date Sex, starring George MacKay and Alexandra Roach; and the Chris Smith feature Detour, starring Tye Sheridan, Emory Cohen and Bel Powley. Which was shortlisted for Best Score at the BIFA awards. Toydrum recently finished scoring Chris Smith’s latest horror feature The Banishing, starring Sean Harris and John Lynch.
Toydrum’s television work also includes the upcoming AMC sci-fi drama Soulmates, from Black Mirror writers William Bridges and Brett Goldstein; Sky1 thriller-comedy Two Weeks to Live, starring Maisie Williams and also Sian Clifford; and ITV thriller Deep Water, directed by Harry Wootliff and starring Anna Friel. And featuring a collaboration with singer-songwriter Beth Orton on the show’s title song. Toydrum are currently working on Alice Lowe’s new feature Timestalker and also their new album, due for release in 2021.
