Baron Harkonnen Isn’t In New DUNE Much – But You Will Fear Him
This October, Stellan Skarsgard (Deep Blue Sea) will play the villain, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune flick. And today we talked about the role. And his calmer, more sinister presence.

Skarsgard tells Daily Beast: “I did eight or ten days on the movie, so my character doesn’t show up for too much, but his presence will be felt. He’s such a frightening presence where even if he doesn’t say anything, I think you’ll be afraid of him. And I’m extremely fat. I had eight hours in the makeup chair every day. And in some scenes, I look very tall because I levitate. You’re going to have a lot of fun with it.”

He adds: “The thing about it, and why I’m looking forward to this film as well, is because it’s Denis Villeneuve. Whatever he does, he creates an atmosphere that is dense, that you can touch, and you’re just sucked into it. You’re never bored—even if he does long, slow takes. The atmosphere builds up, and you’re in his universe. I think it will be the same with this one. He’s lovely to work with, and a beautiful man.”

Villeneuve directs Dune from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel. Chalamet, Ferguson, and Brolin’s co-stars include Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, and Javier Bardem. Charlotte Rampling joins in with Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Stephen Henderson, and Zendaya.
Recently, original Dune star Kyle MacLachlan admits it’s “disheartening” the new film might debut on HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. He tells Seattle Times: “I think the simultaneous release is kind of the wave of the future. It’s disheartening though because a movie like that is meant to be seen on the large screen.”
Dune finds Duke Leto Atreides accepting stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. The only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, the spice. The drug extends life, provides superhuman thoughts, and makes space travel possible. Leto takes his concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images, and suggestive material. Dune hits theaters and also (maybe) HBO Max on October 1.
