A source tells Small Screen: “All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season. It’s still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”

Well, that’s good to know!

Fincher says he’d like Mindhunter to end with the FBI taking BTK aka Dennis Rader (Sonny Valicenti) into custody. Fincher told Variety: “At some point, I’d love to revisit it. The hope was to get all the way up to the late ’90s, early 2000’s, hopefully, get all the way up to people knocking on the door at Dennis Rader’s house.”

That said, Fincher admits Mindhunter may not have a future given its budget. Plus, we hear season 2 was a nightmare to produce with Fincher firing the showrunner, throwing out eight scripts, and move to Pittsburgh to oversee production.

Fincher says: “I don’t know if it makes sense to continue [Mindhunter] It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the costI certainly needed some time away. We had all hands on deck to finish [season two] and we didn’t have a ton of scripts and a ton of outlines and a bible standing by for season three. I’ll admit I was a little bit like ‘I don’t know that I’m ready to spend another two years in the crawl space.’

Executive produced by David Fincher and also Charlize Theron. Mindhunter follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench. They attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches. Along the way, the agents pioneer the development of modern serial-killer profiling.

The second season sports a 99% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Mindhunter expands its narrative horizons without losing sight of the details that made its first season so rich. Crafting a chilling second season that is as unsettling as it is utterly absorbing.
