Horror History: MEGAN IS MISSING Is Now 10 Years Old

One of the most shocking horror movies of the 21st Century is Megan is Missing. It hit on this day in 2011. Written and directed by Michael Goi, the film serves as a stark warning for teens (especially young women) who befriend strangers online. The found footage film is also one of the first examples of a ‘computer screen movie’. A format later popularized by films like Unfriended and Searching.

The ending is so harrowing, this horror journalist had trouble watching; people have criticized it for its over-the-top violence. And the sexualization of its young female protagonists. Truthfully, it creeps right up to the border of propaganda. New Zealand actually banned it! Still, fans of extreme horror tropes applaud Megan is Missing for its no-holds-barred brutality and fearless storytelling.

I can’t in good conscious recommend watching Megan is Missing; that’s an endeavor you must face at your own risk. Still, if you’ve never seen Megan is Missing and you’re curious about the buzz, check out the trailer and synopsis below.

Synopsis:
A teenager (Rachel Quinn) disappears after meeting an online acquaintance (Dean Waite).

Trivia:
This film was partly inspired by the 2002 disappearances of Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis in Oregon City, Oregon. Police found their remains stored on the property of Ward Weaver. Gaddis’s in a shed, and Pond’s in a sealed drum buried under a concrete slab. (Source)

The film became a pop culture sensation in November of 2020, after it went viral on the video-sharing social media platform TikTok – where it received 83 million views. (Source)
