Horror History: TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE Is Now 31 Years Old

On this day in horror history, Tales from the Darkside: The Movie opened back in 1990. George A. Romero’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Cat From Hell.

Synopsis:
The first of three dark tales involves resentful student (Steve Buscemi) looking to an Egyptian mummy for help in settling some scores. Then, hitman Halston (David Johansen) is contracted to kill a cat that has terrorized and even killed members of an extremely wealthy family. Lastly, struggling artist Preston (James Remar) witnesses a demon commit a bizarre murder on a city street but agrees to keep it a secret when the devilish being promises wealth in return for his silence.

Christian Slater, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi lead the killer cast. Plus, Deborah Harry, Matthew Lawrence, William Hickey, David Johansen, James Remar, and Rae Dawn Chong. The film is sometimes said to have been intended as Creepshow 3.

John Harrison directed. Richard P. Rubinstein and Mitchell Galin produced. Michael McDowell penned Lot 249 (based on the Arthur Conan Doyle story) and Lover’s Vow. George A. Romero wrote Cat from Hell based on the story by Stephen King.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie was a modest box office success. It opened in third place its first weekend and grossed a total of $16.3M.

Laurel Productions initially announced a sequel in October 1990. A screenplay was written by McDowell and also Romero, with Gahan Wilson. Segments included an adaptation of Robert Bloch’s “Almost Human,” alongside Stephen King’s short stories “Pinfall” and also “Rainy Season.” This sequel, however, never came to fruition.
